The Noosa Biosphere Reserve is an internationally protected area that covers the region of Noosa. It was the first Biosphere Reserve for the state of Queensland and established in 2008. The reserve’s Noosa Shire boundary extends offshore by 3 kilometres, and covers over 150,000 hectares. With woodlands, wetlands, marine and river habitats included all within a relatively contained area, you get a chance to see and experience a range of environments and their native flora and fauna. The reserve houses over 300 species of birds, 44% of all known species in Australia, as well as migratory birds. Amongst the mammalian species, koalas are regularly spotted, however there are a number of other mammals that are much rarer and less likely to be observed, such as the false water rat, tiger quoll and long eared bat. There’s even dugong that live in the estaurine parts of the Biosphere, although sadly, their numbers have fallen dangerously low — with predictions of their eventual extinction by the end of this century.
