Christmas comes early to Noosa!

Santas surfing the Noosa National Park

Santas by Sea

Christmas came early to Noosa this year.  To be specific it arrived at 10 am on Thursday the 6th of December via the Minister for Local Government.

The Christmas present Noosa received is; a vote in March 2013, for the right to regain a Noosa Council. Noosa residents have finally received the opportunity to determine for all time Noosa’s future.

So what’s the big deal?

Here it is in a nutshell……

In previous eras Noosa’s critical town planning (and all other council decisions) were controlled by their own local council made up entirely of Noosa people.
Then, in 2008, against massive opposition the Queensland government brutally forced amalgamation on 97 local government areas including Noosa in the name of “cost efficiencies”.

Noosa was forced to become part of the Sunshine Coast Council – a super city incorporating areas as far south as Landsborough, and areas such as Maroochydore and Mooloolaba which aspire to be cities in their own right and who share very little lifestyle values with the people of Noosa. The seat of council was relocated to Nambour and Noosa residents were hit with rate increases and loss of services and representation.

Noosa has always chosen and fought for many decades for a different model. It is based around low level, low density development. It insists on round-a-bouts instead of traffic lights, and very subdued advertising signage. It has height restrictions of four storeys along Noosa Main Beach. It does its best to be a low stress area with minimal invasive city symbols ie. no parking metres. It is a place that has chosen not to become part of the mediocrity of urban sprawl that makes up so much of Australia. It is truly a special place and because of the community’s long-standing commitment to conservation, sustainable development and lifestyle protection Noosa is now a UNESCO-recognised Noosa Biosphere Reserve.

Over decades the Noosa community has proven itself eminently capable of administering its own region. It has earned the right to continue to do so.

This model is the reason visitors from across the globe are attracted to live and holiday in Noosa and this is the reason land values are amongst the highest in the country. Under the current amalgamated super council, Noosa is losing its way ….fast, unable to uphold the values and vision for which it has fought to retain for so long.

So, thanks to some passionate, hardworking and committed local people, Noosa now has been given a chance to take control of its destiny once again. “After many years of effort we will get a chance to decide whether we want a local Council making local decisions after listening to what residents want.” “We will get a chance to vote against becoming a city, with high-rise, paid parking, over-development and the crime and congestion that go with it. “If the people vote in numbers of more than 50% in favour, Noosa may be able to reinstate a council which has over generations proven to be cost effective and visionary.

If the people vote to stay part of the super council it will only be a matter of time before Noosa’s only 2 councillors are overwhelmed by the huge majority of councillors focussed on growth and development at all costs….and this special part of the world will soon become eroded and just another mediocre ‘suburbia by sea’.

If Noosa people get it right in March, you and your family should be able to enjoy Noosa for generations to come.

Merry Christmas Noosa!  May all your wishes come true!

What makes a great family holiday?

family holiday funEvery family is different (some more than others!) but when it comes to ensuring that the investment made in a family holiday is worth it – for everyone, it can be tricky.

We’ve witnessed the thrills and spills of many family holidays and here’s our thoughts on what really makes a really successful family holiday and guarantees that everyone goes home happy and relaxed with memories that last a lifetime…

  • Get out there!  Choose somewhere totally different from home – invigorate their senses, and give them a whole other perspective ie. Get away from cars, signs, traffic lights, shops, houses and head to the beach, the bush, the mountains, the snow, an island.…somewhere different.
  •  Zone out!  Get them out of their comfort zone by doing things you don’t normally do ie. Learn to surf; Stand up paddling; cooking class; boating, crabbing; shell hunting, kite flying, jetskiing, fishing, star gazing, elephant riding, mountain climbing, parasailing, enjoy a massage or special treatment.
  •  Lighten up!  Take very little…just the basics.  Definitely no technical gadgets, no ipods, iphones, ipads, gaming devices etc and turn the phone off.  Check it once a day if you have to, then switch it off.  This is time to be fully present.
  •  Tempt the tastebuds:  Food memories are often ones that stay with us ever – bringing back that holiday feeling for years to come.  Use the opportunity to get them out of their normal eating routines and challenge them to try some of the local cuisine.  Freshen up their tastebuds with the local seafood, tropical fruit, desserts, fresh coconut..it’s part of the experience.
  •  Move it!   Burn up some energy and tire them out with a little exercise.  Early morning dip and a surf, bushwalk, mountain climb or sunset beach walk will usually do the trick.
  •  Slow it down!  Every day needs some quiet ‘me’ time for everybody.  Give everyone some space to do their own thing in peace.
  •  Have fun!  It’s a holiday after all so it’s a great excuse to do fun stuff and laugh at each other and at yourselves ie. Belly dancing!
  •  Chill out!  Well, that’s a given.

Best wishes a wonderful family holiday.

That time of the year

Well it’s getting to the pointy end of the year again (yes, already!) and this is the time of depleted energy levels, frayed tempers and generally bad attitudes. So, why not sneak in a short break to recharge and revitalize before the silly season kicks in. Got 3 days? Head to Noosa and indulge in a ‘Short Break’ before or after the Christmas rush.

Hen’s night in Noosa

By | accommodation noosa, Noosa Accommodation, Noosa Crest Resort, Noosa Weddings, Stand Up Paddling, Surfing | No Comments

I’ve just been to the gorgeous Raquel from Bareskin Beauty, she’s been my beautician for nearly 10 years and one of the best if not the best beautician. There is so much work for a female or maybe it’s just me – nails done, waxing done, eyelash tint done and spray tan tonight. Yes, I live in the beautiful Noosa where theres lots of beach and sunshine yet I still need to get a spray tan!

My hen’s night is tomorrow, my last girls night out before the wedding and I’m not sure of the plan tomorrow. It’s a secret but I’ve been told to take an over night bag containing swimwear, dress, heals, makeup and my PJ’s hmmmm. I think we are staying in Noosa, possibly Noosa Crest and doing some form of water sports ie Stand Up Paddling or Surfing.

I hope I survive the weekend, wish me luck and I’ll update you with details and possibly a photo if its acceptable upon my return.
